ABUJA– In a significant shake-up of the nation’s security apparatus, President Bola Tinubu has dismissed the service chiefs and appointed new military heads with immediate effect.
The move, announced in a press release from the State House on Friday, aims to “strengthen the national security architecture” of Nigeria.
The outgoing Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, has been replaced by General Olufemi Oluyede. The other service branches also received new leaders: Major-General W. Shaibu is the new Chief of Army Staff, Air Vice Marshall S.K Aneke takes over as Chief of Air Staff, and Rear Admiral I. Abbas is the new Chief of Naval Staff.
However, the Chief of Defence Intelligence, Major-General E.A.P Undiendeye, was the sole senior security official to retain his position.
President Tinubu, who is the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, expressed his “most profound appreciation” to General Musa and the other outgoing service chiefs for their “patriotic service, and dedicated leadership.”
The new appointees have been charged to “justify the confidence reposed in them” and to build upon the “professionalism, vigilance and comradeship that define the Armed Forces of Nigeria.”
The changes take effect immediately as the administration seeks to address the ongoing security challenges facing the country.
