The Lagos State Police Command has confirmed the arrest and detention of popular social media influencer Habeeb Hamzat, widely known as ‘Peller,’ following a viral video of him driving at dangerous speeds while livestreaming, an act which resulted in a serious road accident.
In a statement released on Tuesday by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Abimbola Adebisi, the Command detailed that the incident occurred on Sunday, December 14, 2025. The police described Peller’s actions as “suicidal” and a grave risk to public safety.
“The suspect was seen driving at a dangerous speed during a live broadcast, leading to a motor accident that posed grave risks to himself and innocent members of the public,” the statement read. “His action constitutes a deliberate attempt to commit suicide and endangered the life of other innocent people.”
Following the wide circulation of the video, Peller was taken into custody. The police stated that the case is now under investigation by the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID). “The outcome of the investigation will be made public and the suspect will be charged to the court of competent jurisdiction in accordance with the law,” the statement assured.
In response to the incident, the Commissioner of Police in Lagos State, CP Olohundare Jimoh, issued a strong warning to social media influencers and content creators. He cautioned against using online platforms to promote or engage in reckless and unlawful conduct.
“The Commissioner of Police… strongly warns social media influencers, content creators and general members of the public to desist from using social media platforms to engage in or promote reckless, dangerous, or unlawful and criminal acts,” the statement conveyed.
CP Jimoh emphasized that such behaviour would not be tolerated. “Such lawlessness will not be tolerated and the full weight of the law will be applied on any offender. The Command further urges all road users to comply strictly with traffic regulations and remains committed to ensuring public peace and safety at all times.”
The arrest has sparked significant discussion online, highlighting ongoing concerns about dangerous stunts performed for social media clout and the legal consequences for such actions.
