IBADAN — The Court of Appeal in Ibadan has upheld Rt. Hon. Oludaisi Elemide as the constitutionally recognised Speaker of the Ogun State House of Assembly, delivered a final verdict on a protracted leadership dispute.
In a ruling on Friday, the appellate court dismissed the appeal filed by the impeached former Speaker, Hon. Olakunle Oluomo, thereby validating the legislative process that removed him from office in January 2024.
The impeachment, carried out by a majority of the Assembly members, cited allegations of financial misconduct, authoritarian leadership, and gross misconduct. Following the removal, the House promptly elected and inaugurated Rt. Hon. Elemide to preside over the legislative business.
The court’s decision reinforces the legality of the impeachment proceedings and the subsequent election of the new Speaker. It effectively ends the legal challenge that had cast uncertainty over the state legislature’s leadership for months.
This ruling is expected to solidify legislative stability in Ogun State, allowing the Assembly to proceed with its duties without further contention over its leadership.
