Ijebu-Ode – Residents of Ijebu-Ode were thrown into shock early this morning after discovering a man allegedly struck down by the Agemo deity while attempting to steal a sacred statue at the Itoro roundabout.
The unidentified man was found lying motionless, pinned under a section of the uprooted Agemo statue, while the other part lay detached from its base. An identity card found on him identified him as Jeremiah Kosesochi Nwoke.
Eyewitnesses reported that the statue, a revered symbol of the Agemo cult in Ijebuland, appeared to have “retaliated” against the theft attempt. The Agemo deity is widely believed to possess supernatural powers, and locals regard such incidents as divine intervention.
Police and traditional authorities have been alerted, and investigations are ongoing. The suspect, now in custody, is receiving medical attention while community leaders perform rituals to appease the deity.
This incident has sparked renewed discussions on the sanctity of cultural relics and the consequences of tampering with sacred objects in Yorubaland.
More details to follow as the story develops.
