In a move set to reshape the political landscape of Ogun State, former Senator Iyabo Obasanjo-Bello, daughter of ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo, officially registered as a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) on Tuesday. The registration took place at the Ibogun Village 11, within the Ifo Local Government Area of the state.

The high-profile defection has ignited intense speculation regarding her immediate political objectives. A source close to the former senator revealed to OgunInsight.com that she has been invited by key stakeholders within the party to contest for a major office in the upcoming elections.

“She was invited to either fight for the governorship ticket or the senatorial ticket,” the confidential source stated. “The people behind this move are the same figures urging Senator Ibikunle Amosun to contest for the Ogun Central Senatorial District seat.”

This development appears to be part of a broader realignment within the Ogun APC, which has been marked by internal dissent. The source further indicated that the move is supported by certain party elements dissatisfied with the administration of the incumbent Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun.

“Governor Abiodun has been working diligently, but some groups are not happy with his style of inclusiveness,” the source added, highlighting underlying tensions within the party’s ranks.

The political manoeuvring is reported to be coordinated by a faction of APC leaders, including some former high-ranking officials. “We mentioned some people who are in the All Progressives Congress who are holding meetings at one of the former governors’ houses,” the source noted, pointing to strategic gatherings aimed at influencing the party’s future direction.

Senator Iyabo Obasanjo, who previously represented Ogun Central Senatorial District in the Senate between 2007 and 2011, has been politically quiet in recent years. Her return to active partisanship under the APC banner signals a significant shift and is expected to intensify the contest for the party’s tickets ahead of the next electoral cycle.

At the time of filing this report, there has been no official statement from Senator Obasanjo-Bello or the state leadership of the APC regarding her specific political plans.
