BREAKING: Lagos Assembly in Turmoil as Speaker Obasa Clashes with Deputy Over N5 Billion Withdrawal

by Adebayo Kazeem

A major crisis has erupted within the Lagos State House of Assembly following allegations that Deputy Speaker Mojisola Meranda approved the withdrawal of N5 billion from the Assembly’s account just days after assuming office. The funds were reportedly earmarked for the purchase of 40 units of 2025 Toyota Land Cruiser SUVs, one for each lawmaker.

According to sources familiar with the matter, Speaker Mudashiru Obasa is demanding the immediate return of the funds, describing the transaction as unauthorized and inappropriate. The dispute has sparked tension between the two leaders, raising concerns about governance and accountability in the state legislature.

Ms Meranda, who made history as Lagos State’s first female speaker on January 13, allegedly approved the disbursement shortly after her swearing-in. The move has drawn sharp criticism from within and outside the Assembly, with many questioning the timing and necessity of such a large expenditure.

The Peoples Gazette, which first reported the development, revealed that the funds were intended to facilitate the purchase of luxury vehicles for lawmakers. However, the decision has been met with resistance, particularly from Speaker Obasa, who insists that due process was not followed.

Public reaction has been swift, with calls for anti-graft agencies, including the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), to investigate the matter. Many Nigerians have taken to social media to demand transparency and accountability, urging authorities to probe the Lagos State House of Assembly for potential financial misconduct.

As the situation unfolds, stakeholders are closely monitoring developments, with growing concerns about the implications for governance in Lagos State. The controversy has also reignited debates about the priorities of public officials and the need for stricter oversight in the management of public funds.
