Renowned Nigerian football icon Christian Chukwu, MFR, former captain and coach of the Super Eagles, has passed away. The sad news was confirmed earlier today by his longtime teammate and friend, Dr Olusegun Odegbami, MON, OLY.

Christian Chukwu was 74 years old

According to Odegbami, Chukwu died between 9:00 and 10:00 AM this morning. The heartbreaking announcement was relayed to him by another football legend, Emmanuel Okala, MON.

Chukwu, affectionately called *‘Chairman’* by his peers, was one of Nigeria’s greatest footballers, captaining the national team in its golden era and later serving as head coach. His leadership on and off the pitch earned him widespread admiration and respect.

Dr. Odegbami, who described Chukwu as a “bosom friend and teammate,” expressed deep sorrow over the loss, saying, *”May ‘Onyim’ find peace with Our Creator in Heaven, and may his family be comforted in this difficult time.”*

Further details regarding his passing and funeral arrangements are expected to be released by his family in due course.

The football community, both in Nigeria and beyond, mourns the loss of a true legend whose legacy will forever remain etched in the annals of Nigerian sports history.

Rest in Peace, Christian Chukwu (1948–2024).
