In a significant ruling, the Supreme Court has dismissed an appeal filed by Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara, challenging the legitimacy of the State House of Assembly led by Speaker Martin Amaewhule.
A five-member panel of the apex court, presided over by Justice Uwani Abba-Aji, delivered the verdict on Monday following the withdrawal of the suit by Governor Fubara’s counsel, Yusuf Ali. The court affirmed the validity of the Amaewhule-led leadership structure of the Rivers State House of Assembly.
In addition to dismissing the appeal, the Supreme Court imposed a cost of ₦2 million against Governor Fubara, payable to the Rivers State House of Assembly and Martin Amaewhule, who were listed as the first and second respondents in the case.
The ruling brings an end to the legal dispute over the leadership of the state legislature, solidifying Amaewhule’s position as the Speaker of the Assembly.
