Commonwealth Games: Toriola, Abiodun cruise into table tennis semi-final

Nigeria’s table tennis players on Saturday defeated Australian opponents in the quarter-final of the men’s doubles event at the Commonwealth Games.

Segun Toriola and Olajide Omotayo defeated Australia’s David Powell and Heming Hu 3-0 in three straight sets of 11-7, 11-5, 11-7.

Segun ToriolaNigeria will face the winner of the clash between Northern Ireland and England.

Seven-time Olympian Toriola advanced to the semi-final men’s singles after beating Australia’s Xin Yan.

Bode Abiodun also advanced to the semi-final after defeating Heming Hu 11-9, 10-12, 11-4, 8-11, 11-8 while Omotayo lost 2-1 to Yan in the quarter-final of the men’s team event.

Meanwhile, it continues to be a tale of woe for Nigeria in weightlifting as Michael Anyalewechi finished fifth in the 89kg category.

Anyalewechi had finished third in the snatch with a lift of 147kg but he could only lift 177kg in the clean and jerk. He had an total score of 324kg.

Earlier in the day, D’Tigers, Nigeria’s basketball team, was defeated 87-65 by Canada.
