Abeokuta, Ogun State – The Oniroyin Support Initiative (OSI), a non-governmental organisation, has announced the launch of an empowerment programme aimed at supporting the families of journalists who lost their lives in the line of duty. The initiative seeks to provide financial and emotional support to bereaved families, ensuring their well-being and honouring the sacrifices made by the journalists.
Mrs. Funke Fadugba, Chairman of the OSI Board of Trustees, emphasised the organisation’s commitment to the cause. “We are proud to launch this programme, which demonstrates our commitment to supporting the families of journalists who sadly passed away when their services were most needed. We believe their families deserve our support and care,” she said.
The launch event is scheduled to take place on **Thursday, 27th February, 2025**, at the Basic Trust International, Oke-Ilewo, Abeokuta, by 12 noon. During the event, cheques and grants will be presented to selected families of deceased journalists to help alleviate their financial burdens and ensure their continued welfare.
The event will be chaired by renowned journalist Mr. Richard Akinnola, while the Ogun State Head of Service, Mr. Kehinde Onasanya, will deliver the keynote address. Dignitaries expected to grace the occasion include the Onirete of Irete-Ijebu, Oba Abdulganiyu Olusegun Awokoya, who will serve as the Royal Father of the Day, and Chief (Mrs.) Bola Obasanjo, wife of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, who will be the Mother of the Day. Also in attendance will be the Ogun State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Tomi Coker.
Comrade Tunde Oladunjoye, OSI Convener, highlighted the programme’s objectives, stating, “This initiative is designed to empower families who have lost their loved ones, particularly journalists, in the line of duty. Together, we can make a difference in their lives and promote a culture of welfare and safety for journalists, ensuring that their sacrifices are not forgotten and their families are supported in their time of need.”
In addition to the empowerment programme, OSI, in collaboration with the Ogun State Ministry of Health, will offer free medical outreach to journalists attending the event. This dual approach aims to address both the financial and health needs of the beneficiaries.
The initiative is expected to draw significant attention to the challenges faced by the families of deceased journalists and reinforce the importance of safeguarding the welfare of media professionals who risk their lives in the pursuit of truth and public service.
