Exclusive: Setonji David May Be Speaker as Lagos Assembly Crisis Nears Resolution

by Adebayo Kazeem

A truce is emerging in the political storm that has rocked the Lagos State House of Assembly following the controversial removal of Speaker Mudasiru Obasa, with indications that Hon. Setonji David from Badagry may be named as the new Speaker.

This Newspaper has exclusively learned that high-profile mediators, including former APC National Chairman and ex-Osun State Governor, Chief Bisi Akande; former Ogun State Governor, Aremo Olusegun Osoba; and Chairman of the Board of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, Chief Pius Akinyelure, have stepped in to broker peace in the crisis-ridden Assembly.

The Assembly has been in turmoil since January 13, when Obasa was ousted over allegations of corruption, abuse of office, and highhandedness. His deputy, Hon. Lesbat Meranda, was swiftly appointed as Speaker in his place. However, Obasa has challenged his removal in court, arguing that due process was not followed.

Reliable sources close to the mediation process reveal that Akande, Osoba, and other key stakeholders held an initial meeting with principal officers and House members over the weekend, with a follow-up meeting expected soon. The mediators are reportedly pushing for a resolution that balances political interests and ensures regional representation in the state’s leadership.

Emerging reports suggest that Hon. Meranda, who hails from Lagos Central, may have been urged to step down and return to her position as Deputy Speaker. This move is said to be part of a broader plan to address concerns over regional representation. With Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu also from Lagos Central, stakeholders have reportedly recommended that the Speaker position be zoned to Lagos West, where Obasa originally hails from.

If the plan materializes, Hon. Setonji David, a lawmaker from Lagos West, is likely to be named as the new Speaker. David, who represents Badagry Constituency II, is seen as a consensus candidate who could unite the House and restore stability.

Sources indicate that Meranda had considered stepping down last Monday when the House reconvened. However, the warm reception she received from House members and staff, coupled with a vote of confidence in her leadership, made it difficult for her to relinquish the position.

The ongoing mediation efforts underscore the delicate balancing act required to resolve the crisis. While political manoeuvring continues, the focus remains on ensuring that Lagos West, a critical zone in the state’s political landscape, is adequately represented by the state’s top leadership.

As the Lagos Assembly inches closer to a resolution, all eyes are on Setonji David, who may soon take the helm as Speaker, marking a new chapter in the state’s political dynamics.
