Just In: Court Sentences Singer Portable to Three Months in Prison for Assault

by Adebayo Kazeem

Ifo – Controversial Nigerian singer Habeeb Okikiola, popularly known as Portable, has been sentenced to three months in prison by a Magistrate Court in Ifo, Ogun State.

Chief Magistrate Babajide Ilo delivered the judgment on Tuesday, convicting the singer on two counts of conspiracy and assault. The court, however, discharged him on the third count of theft due to insufficient evidence.

Portable was initially arraigned in April 2023 on a three-count charge, including assault and theft of musical instruments (Charge No. MIF/192C/2023). The prosecution, led by Inspector Olumide Awoleke, stated that the singer and others at large conspired to assault one Osimosu Emmanuel Oluwafemi on November 18, 2022, in Okeosa, Ilogbo.

Despite being granted bail set at ₦300,000 with two sureties, Portable failed to appear in court multiple times, leading to his remand last Thursday.

In his ruling, Magistrate Ilo sentenced the singer to one-month imprisonment or a ₦10,000 fine for conspiracy (Count 1) and two months imprisonment or a ₦20,000 fine for assault (Count 2). The sentences are to run consecutively.

The case has drawn public attention due to Portable’s controversial public persona and repeated legal troubles.
