Lagos Assembly Crisis: Obasa to Withdraw Lawsuit, No Resignation Plans — APC Clarifies

by Adebayo Kazeem

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos State has dismissed speculations that the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mr. Mudashiru Obasa, is planning to resign following the recent leadership crisis. The party clarified that Obasa’s resignation was never part of the terms of settlement reached to resolve the dispute.

This development comes as Speaker Obasa held a peace parley with aggrieved lawmakers on Tuesday, just 24 hours after his re-election. During the meeting, Obasa reportedly agreed to withdraw a lawsuit challenging his previous removal from office.

Recall that Obasa was re-elected as Speaker on Monday after Mrs. Mosisili Meranda, who had initially stepped into the role, withdrew her candidacy. The resolution followed a meeting between the Governor’s Advisory Council (GAC), led by Pa Tajudeen Olusi, APC Chairman Pastor Cornelius Ojelabi, and the Attorney-General of Lagos State, Mr. Lawal Pedro (SAN), with lawmakers opposed to Obasa’s leadership.

Contrary to earlier rumors, the APC spokesman in Lagos, Seye Oladejo, confirmed that there was no agreement for Obasa to resign. “To the best of my knowledge, there was no time the arrangement for Obasa to resign came up in the terms of settlement of the crisis,” Oladejo stated. He also confirmed that Obasa would soon withdraw the lawsuit against his colleagues to foster peace and progress within the House and the party.

Meanwhile, Speaker Obasa held a closed-door reconciliation meeting with 39 lawmakers at the Assembly complex on Tuesday. The meeting, attended by Deputy Speaker Mrs. Meranda, aimed to address grievances and unite the House for a fresh start. Sources revealed that the House is expected to resume sittings soon, with Obasa dropping the lawsuit filed against 33 lawmakers at the Ikeja Court.

The peace parley and withdrawal of the lawsuit signal a move towards resolving the internal crisis that had threatened the stability of the Lagos State House of Assembly.
