A Delegation of local government chairmen under the auspices of the Ogun State Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) paid a formal condolence visit on Wednesday to the family of the late Madam Lucia Onabanjo, wife of the first civilian Governor of Ogun State, the late Chief Victor Olabisi Onabanjo.

The delegation was led by the State ALGON Chairman and Chairman of Odeda Local Government, Hon. Dr Folasade Waliat Adeyemo. She was accompanied by the chairmen of Ijebu North, Yewa North, Remo North, Imeko-Afon, and Ijebu Ode Local Government Areas.

The ALGON leaders were received at the family home by Barrister Olivia Olubukunola Onabanjo, Chairman of the Ogun State Local Government Service Commission and a member of the Onabanjo family.

In her remarks, Hon. Dr Folasade Adeyemo expressed the collective sorrow of the entire local government structure in Ogun State. She praised the enduring legacy of Madam Lucia Onabanjo, describing her as a pillar of strength and virtue whose life was intertwined with the state’s early democratic journey.

“Madam Lucia Onabanjo was a matriarch in the truest sense, whose grace, quiet strength, and unwavering support were foundational during a critical era in our state’s history,” stated Dr Adeyemo. “We are here today on behalf of all 20 Local Government Areas to extend our deepest sympathies and to assure the entire Onabanjo family that her noble legacy and contributions to our state are remembered and deeply cherished.”

In response, Barrister Olivia Olubukunola Onabanjo thanked the delegation for the thoughtful visit, noting that it was a significant comfort to the family.

“We are profoundly touched by this gesture of solidarity from the leadership of our local governments,” Barrister Onabanjo said. “It is a testament to the enduring respect and affection held for our father, Chief Bisi Onabanjo, and our beloved mother, Lucia. Your presence and words of comfort strengthen us during this period of loss, and we are grateful for the continued recognition of our family’s humble service to Ogun State.”

The late Madam Lucia Onabanjo was the wife of Chief Victor Olabisi Onabanjo, who served as Governor of Ogun State from 1979 to 1983. Her passing marks the loss of a significant figure from a pivotal chapter in the state’s political history. The condolence visit underscores the respect accorded to the Onabanjo family and their lasting impact on the state of Ogun.
