Ogun Government Shuts Down Adatan Market Over Street Trading Violations

by Adebayo Kazeem

The Ogun State Government has closed the popular Adatan Market in Abeokuta, the state capital, following repeated violations of environmental laws prohibiting street trading and the obstruction of drainage channels. The decision to shut down the market was announced on Thursday by Alhaji Farook Akintunde, the Special Adviser to the Governor on the Environmental Protection Agency (OGEPA) and Chairman of the State Taskforce on Environmental Compliance and Enforcement.

Akintunde explained that the government had issued multiple warnings and conducted extensive sensitization campaigns to persuade traders to cease trading on walkways, roads, and drainage channels. However, these efforts proved futile, leaving the government with no choice but to enforce the law.

“Despite several entreaties and awareness campaigns, the traders continued to engage in street trading and erected shanties and makeshift structures on drainage channels. These illegal structures are not only hazardous but are also filled with waste, blocking the free flow of water and increasing the risk of flooding during the rainy season,” Akintunde stated.

The market will remain closed until the traders meet specific conditions, including clearing all drainage channels of silt, cleaning the entire market space, and signing an agreement to refrain from street trading and other activities that violate state environmental laws.

Akintunde emphasized that street trading and the obstruction of drainage systems pose significant risks to both the traders and the general public. He urged the traders to comply with the government’s directives to ensure the market’s reopening and to prevent future closures.

“The state government is committed to maintaining a clean, safe, and flood-free environment. We cannot allow illegal activities that endanger lives and properties to continue unchecked. The market will only reopen once the traders demonstrate full compliance with the law,” he added.

The closure of Adatan Market has sparked mixed reactions among residents and traders. While some support the government’s action as a necessary step to enforce order and prevent flooding, others have expressed concerns about the economic impact on traders who rely on the market for their livelihoods.

The Ogun State Government has assured affected traders of its willingness to work with them to ensure a swift resolution, provided they adhere to the stipulated guidelines.
