Ogun Urges Residents of Border Towns to Embrace Proper Environmental Sanitation

by Adebayo Kazeem

The Ogun State Government has called on residents of border towns, including Ojodu-Abiodun, Denro, Ishasi, Alagbole-Akute, Lambe, and Ijoko, to adopt proper environmental sanitation and hygiene practices. This appeal comes as part of efforts to maximize the benefits of the newly constructed road infrastructure provided by the Prince Dapo Abiodun-led administration.

Dr. Ola Oresanya, the Commissioner for Environment, made the call during an environmental tour of the newly developed road infrastructure in the border towns. The tour, which included officials from the Ministry of Environment, Ogun State Environmental Protection Agency (OGEPA), Ogun State Waste Management Authority (OGWAMA), and representatives of Ifo and Ado-Odo Local Governments, was a follow-up to Governor Dapo Abiodun’s recent inspection visit to the area.

Dr. Oresanya emphasized the importance of maintaining the newly constructed roads and drainage systems. He urged residents and Community Development Associations (CDAs) to monitor and prevent waste from being dumped into drainage channels, which could lead to clogging and environmental hazards. He also warned against channelling wastewater from homes onto the roads, as this could undermine the infrastructure’s durability.

The Commissioner further advised CDAs to act as first responders by discouraging roadside traders from placing planks and containers on drainage channels. Such practices, he noted, could obstruct the free flow of water during the rainy season and reduce the lifespan of the drainage systems.

Dr. Oresanya also encouraged residents to provide covered bins in their homes and patronize certified waste collectors assigned to their communities for proper waste disposal. This, he said, would help maintain a clean and healthy environment while preserving the newly constructed infrastructure.

The tour underscores the state government’s commitment to ensuring that the benefits of its developmental projects are sustained through community cooperation and responsible environmental practices.
