Olusegun Awolowo, the former Executive Director of the Nigerian Export Promotion Council (NEPC) and a prominent grandson of the late Nigerian statesman, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, has passed away at the age of 62.

The Awolowo family confirmed the death in a statement released on Thursday.

“With extremely heavy hearts, we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father and grandfather- Olusegun Awolowo,” the family said.

While the cause and exact date of his death were not immediately disclosed, his passing has sent waves of grief through the political and business circles where he was a respected figure.

Awolowo served as the Executive Director/Chief Executive Officer of the NEPC, where he was a key advocate for strengthening Nigeria’s non-oil exports. He was also the grandson of Chief Obafemi Awolowo, the revered pioneer and former Premier of the Western Region, cementing his place within one of Nigeria’s most influential political lineages.

Born on 27 September 1963, Awolowo was widely regarded for his dedication to public service and his efforts to advance Nigeria’s economic prospects. The family expressed deep gratitude for his life, legacy, and the love he shared, saying, “May his gentle soul rest in perfect peace.”

Olusegun Awolowo Jr. is survived by his wife, children, and grandchildren. His passing marks the end of a life devoted to family, faith, and national service, leaving behind a lasting legacy in both public and private spheres.
