LAGOS – In a candid and revealing interview, Afrobeats queen Tiwa Savage has set the record straight on two of the most persistent topics surrounding her personal life: her highly publicised feud with superstar Davido and the swirling rumours of a past romance with Wizkid.
Speaking to The Breakfast Club in an interview shared Tuesday, Savage opened up about the December 2023 incident that led to her filing a police petition against Davido, while also shutting down speculation about her relationship with fellow icon Wizkid.
The Davido Dispute: A “Misunderstanding” Blown Out of Proportion
Savage provided a detailed background to the tension, which she described as a major “misunderstanding.” She explained that her close friendship with Sophia Momodu, the mother of Davido’s first child, was at the root of the issue.
“Our kids are friends, and they’ve gone to the same school since they were one. They’re 10 now,” Savage revealed. “I naturally grew a relationship with the mother of their kid. And I didn’t really know there were issues.”
The singer claimed the problem began after a simple, friendly interaction with Momodu at a social event. “I guess I was at an event and she was too. Naturally, we greeted each other. He saw that, and he took it the wrong way,” she stated. “He felt like I knew what was happening and was on her side—but that’s not the case.”
Savage alleged that Davido responded by sending her derogatory messages, including a warning for her to “be careful in Lagos,” which she interpreted as a threat. This prompted her to take legal action.
However, Savage was quick to downplay any real danger, expressing her belief that Davido didn’t mean it. “I don’t think he was ever going to carry it out. David is such a joyful person,” she said, emphasising that her primary concern was for the safety and well-being of their children.
She also clarified that filing the police report was a last resort. “I reached out to members of his family before I did anything… but none of them came back to me. I just wanted to ensure safety for everyone involved, and that’s why I filed a petition. It wasn’t about revenge.”
Concluding on a note of peace, Savage affirmed, “I want everyone to know there’s no bad blood. I haven’t spoken to him, but I love him, and I always put our kids first. That’s what matters.”
Wizkid Romance Rumours: “It’s Not About Him”
In a separate revelation, Tiwa Savage directly addressed the long-standing rumours of a secret relationship with Wizkid. She shut them down emphatically.
“Shout out to Wizkid. I love Wizkid. I respect Wizkid. It’s not about him,” she declared.
Savage explained that her previous comments about a private, and at times “embarrassing,” relationship with a famous figure had been misattributed to Wizkid. She described the unnamed relationship as one that negatively impacted her self-esteem.
“At the time, I didn’t see how bad it was. It chipped away at my confidence,” she admitted, noting that the experience was so painful she struggled to perform songs inspired by it. “It’s embarrassing to think I let that happen.”
Despite the pain, Savage acknowledged that the challenging relationship ultimately shaped her music, bringing a raw authenticity to her songs about love and heartbreak.
The interview offers fans a clearer picture of the woman behind the headlines, showcasing Tiwa Savage’s desire to move past drama and focus on what truly matters: her music, her family, and her peace.
