ILISHAN-REMO – The Gateway International Airport has been described as the finest and most strategic investment of the Ogun State government under Governor Dapo Abiodun.

The declaration was made on Thursday by the Governor’s Elders Advisory Council, led by its Chairman, Chief Olu Okuboyejo, during an inspection tour of the newly completed aviation facility.

Chief Okuboyejo, visibly impressed with the state-of-the-art infrastructure, stated that the airport rivals the best globally.

“It is an excellent airport. I have travelled the whole length of the world, and… what I have seen here today measures up and is much better than a number of other airports,” the elder statesman said.

He praised the project as a “best long-term investment,” noting that its developmental potential over the next 20 to 30 years is “magnificent.” Comparing it to the evolution of the Murtala Muhammed Airport in Lagos, Okuboyejo described the airport as the “best legacy” of the Abiodun administration.

The Council Chairman urged the state to seek approval from the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) to enable international operations, which would boost revenue and make the airport self-sustaining. He also lauded the Governor for following in the footsteps of great leaders remembered for iconic infrastructure.

Also speaking is the Commissioner for Transportation, Engr. Gbenga Dairo, explained that the airport was designed as an anchor project for the industrial activities in the Remo Economic Cluster and beyond. He assured that the facility, with its passenger terminal, cargo warehouses, and control tower, is fully equipped for commercial operations.

The Airport Manager, Captain Dapo Olumide, confirmed that regulatory officials are already on-site for final preparations. He announced that the first commercial flight is scheduled for next Tuesday, with passengers from Sagamu, Ijebu-Ode, and Abeokuta already booking tickets.
