The Executive Chairman of Obafemi Owode Local Government, Amb. Adesina Lanre Ogunsola, FCPA, has issued a stern warning to traders at the Mowe Market over unsanitary practices and obstruction of walkways and roads.

Ogunsola’s visit to the market on Thursday followed a directive from the Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, CON, to address environmental concerns in commercial areas.

The council boss expressed strong disapproval of the indiscriminate dumping of refuse within the market, describing it as an eyesore that tarnishes the community’s image. He emphasised that such acts are punishable under environmental laws.

Ogunsola also ordered traders selling on walkways and roadside setbacks to vacate immediately and warned shop owners against renting out such spaces for commercial activities.

He highlighted the risks posed by roadside trading, including traffic congestion and safety hazards for pedestrians and motorists.

In a positive development, the chairman assured residents and commuters on the Mowe axis that the road linking the market to the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway has been marked for asphalt rehabilitation.

He stated that the construction is part of the government’s plan to upgrade infrastructure in the area to match its growing commercial activities.

Market leaders pledged their cooperation with the directive. The Babaloja of Mowe Market, Alhaji Nurudeen Alowonle, commended the chairman’s proactive approach and assured full compliance from the traders.

Similarly, the Iyaloja General, Mrs Ganiyat Oyelakin, promised the support of market women in enforcing the order and maintaining a clean, orderly environment.

The chairman was accompanied by key officials including the Supervisor for Water and Environmental Sanitation, Hon. Emmanuel Adeola, and the Director of Information, Education and Sports, Prince Segun Soneye.
