ABEOKUTA – A police officer has been tragically killed in a hit-and-run incident involving a man alleged to be an internet fraudster, popularly known as a “Yahoo Boy,” along the busy Abeokuta-Sagamu Expressway in the Kobape area.
The incident, which occurred on Tuesday afternoon, sent shockwaves through the community and prompted an immediate mob response against the suspected driver.
According to eyewitnesses at the scene, the yet-to-be-identified police officer was riding a motorcycle along the highway when a speeding car veered and struck him. The driver did not stop to render aid but instead accelerated away from the scene in a clear hit-and-run.
“The car was moving at a very dangerous speed,” one witness, who asked to remain anonymous, stated. “He hit the officer and just kept going without even slowing down. It wasn’t intentional.”
The brazen act incited anger among residents and passersby. A crowd immediately gave chase to the fleeing vehicle. The pursuit culminated near the Day Waterman School in Kobape, where the suspect was successfully intercepted and apprehended by the enraged mob.
The suspect was reportedly prevented from being subjected to instant jungle justice by the timely intervention of our reporter, who was alerted to the scene.
The identity of the deceased officer is being withheld pending because we are waiting for the police to get more information
