SAGAMU, Ogun State – In a significant move to curb road accidents and promote responsible riding, Lafarge Africa Plc. and the Articulate Motorcycle Owners and Riders Association of Nigeria (AMORAN) have joined forces to champion a major road safety campaign for the commercial motorcycle community in Sagamu and its environs.
The collaborative event, an annual initiative dedicated to promoting road safety awareness, served as a critical platform to advocate for safer roads and responsible behaviour among motorcycle riders, who are a vital part of the state’s transportation ecosystem.
The programme, held on 20/08/2025 at the TRACE office in Sagamu, in Sagamu Local Government, brought together a wide array of stakeholders. Representatives from other major motorcycle associations in the state were in attendance, alongside key paramilitary and traffic management agencies, including the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps (TRACE).
Led by the State Auditor, Comrade Abiodun Soyinka, and the SSA Media, Comrade Azeez Osha, the AMORAN delegation emphasised the association’s commitment to self-regulation and cooperation with state authorities.
As the chief sponsor of the event, Lafarge Cement Wapco Nigeria Plc. Demonstrated its corporate social responsibility by distributing hundreds of high-visibility reflective jackets and certified safety helmets to riders at no cost. This donation is aimed directly at reducing accidents, especially during early morning, night, and low-visibility conditions, by making riders more conspicuous to other motorists.
“Safety is a core value at Lafarge Africa,” said a company representative. “Our operations are not just about manufacturing cement; we are deeply invested in the well-being of the communities where we work. Supporting this initiative aligns with our commitment to protecting lives and ensuring a safer, healthier environment for the people of Ogun State.”
The event was highly interactive, offering attendees a unique opportunity to engage directly with officials. Riders asked pressing questions on topics ranging from updated traffic regulations and proper licensing procedures to how to interact safely with other vehicles on the road. Officials from TRACE and other agencies provided clarifications and educated the riders on best practices.
“This is more than just a talk shop,” stated Comrade Azeez Osha of AMORAN. “It is a game-changer for our community. When our members are safe, everyone on the road is safe. We are grateful to Lafarge for this partnership and we urge every rider here today to use these safety gears not just for their protection, but for the safety of their passengers and other road users.”
The initiative has been widely praised as a model of effective collaboration between a private corporation, a transport union, and government agencies, setting a precedent for similar life-saving programmes across other states in Nigeria.
