The Omoluwabi Movement, a non-governmental, socio-political organization, based in the South West, has commended President Muhammadu Buhari for his declaration of June 12 as “Democracy Day” and the posthumous award of the highest honour in the land on the winner of the June 12 1993 Presidential election, Bashorun Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola, popularly known as MKO.

In its maiden media release signed by Comrade Tunde Oladunjoye, one of the movement’s directors, the group also appreciated the special recognition given to the late Senior Advocate of the Masses (SAM),Chief Gani Fawehinmi SAN, who it described as the “legal luminary who put his wealth of knowledge of the law at the service of the common man”.
The statement read inter alia:
“Mr. President Sir, by this your  declaration and due recognition of June 12, you have not only honoured Bashorun MKO Abiola, but also all Nigerians of different ethnic origins who participated in the historic election, and all those who fought for its actualization, especially those martyrs who died in the process”.
“Furthermore, coming from a President, a former military Head of State, and someone of different extraction from MKO Abiola’s, you have actually validated the unique achievement of  the June 12 , 1993 presidential election as a Pan-Nigerian Mandate. You have made history, Mr. President, and you are emerging quickly as the father of a true new Nigeria where the ethos of unity and notion of  the New Tribe is being entrenched.”
“Also, the posthumous award of GCON on late Senior Advocate the the Masses (SAM), Chief Gani Fawehinmi SAN, is more than an icing on the cake! Till date, Gani Fawehinmi remains inimitable, irreplaceable and unforgettable in Nigeria’s strive for democracy, the rule of law, and a just and egalitarian society. “Gani”, as he was fondly called by many, towered above his contemporaries as a people’s advocate. He was an uncommon critic, who never criticized government policies without offering alternatives”.
“It is our desire to see Nigeria’s living heroes and heroines of the June 12 struggle come together again and seize this recognition as a call to reinvent, reinvoke and reinvigorate our struggle  for genuine representative democracy”, the statement added.
