SAGAMU, OGUN STATE – The atmosphere in Sagamu was one of unbridled celebration on Wednesday following the official announcement of the suspension of former Governor Otunba Gbenga Daniel by the State Executive Committee of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The suspension, which stems from allegations of anti-party activities during the 2023 general elections and the just-concluded Remo Federal constituency election, has been met with roaring approval from party faithful in the former governor’s own political backyard. Supporters gathered at the local party secretariat, chanting and waving APC banners in a show of force.
The State Publicity Secretary, Femi Nuberu, confirmed the suspension in a statement, citing Daniel’s alleged failure to mobilise support for the party’s gubernatorial candidate, Governor Dapo Abiodun, and other APC candidates in the last election. The suspension is pending the outcome of an investigation by a disciplinary committee.
For many local members, the decision is a long-awaited vindication. “This is a victory for the grassroots,” declared Mrs. Adeola Shobajo, a ward women leader. “For too long, we have laboured while some so-called leaders worked against us. How can you wear our uniform and play for another team? The suspension shows that the party belongs to everyone, not just the big names. We are finally breathing fresh air in Ogun APC.”
Echoing her sentiment, a youth leader, Comrade Oluwatosin Omolaja, stated, “We, the young people who sweated to get votes, felt the sting of his actions directly. It was demoralising. Today’s suspension sends a powerful message that indiscipline will not be tolerated, no matter how highly placed you are. It strengthens our belief in the party’s internal democracy and leadership under Governor Abiodun.”
However, the move also highlights the deep-seated factions within the Remo zone chapter. A male chieftain from the Remo region, who spoke on condition of anonymity, offered a more cautious perspective.
“He said that although Senator Daniel deserved what he got from the party, the party constitution must be respected, and we must also be strategic,” he said. “Daniel is a political force. This action will undoubtedly have ramifications. My hope is that it leads to genuine reconciliation and not a prolonged feud that could weaken our collective front moving forward.”
Attempts to reach aides of the former governor for comment were not immediately successful. The suspension sets the stage for a significant political realignment in Ogun State as the APC consolidates its power base ahead of future elections.
