Abeokuta – Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, has approved N16.5 million in support for 33 sports associations in the state as part of preparations for the 22nd National Sports Festival (NSF), scheduled to hold from May 16 to 30.

The Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Mr. Tokunbo Talabi, announced the governor’s approval on Wednesday during a stakeholders’ meeting with athletes, coaches, and sports association chairmen at the June 12 Cultural Centre, Kuto, Abeokuta.

Each of the 33 participating associations will receive N500,000 to facilitate their preparations. Talabi emphasized that the funds are strictly for training and development, warning against misuse.

“This subvention is not a largesse to be shared but an avenue to ensure smooth preparation for our athletes,” he stated.

The SSG also revealed that the state government would monitor the impact of the funds and implement a new structure to drive sports development. Athletes are expected to begin closed-door camping immediately.

In his remarks, the Commissioner for Sports Development, Hon. Wasiu Isiaka, disclosed that Ogun State will host a pre-festival competition in late April, inviting two other states to enhance competitiveness. Outstanding athletes and associations will be rewarded based on their performances at the NSF.

Talabi urged athletes to adopt motivational traditions, such as unique war songs, to boost team spirit, while cautioning against sensational criticism on social media.

“Constructive feedback is welcome, but mischief will not be tolerated,” he added.

The National Sports Festival will serve as a platform to showcase Ogun State’s upgraded sporting facilities and reinforce its commitment to sports excellence.
