The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) will on Friday arraign 23 suspected internet fraudsters before Justice D. Dipeolu of the Federal High Court, Ikoyi, Lagos.
The suspects were among 93 individuals arrested during a sting operation at a hotel within the premises of the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL) in Abeokuta. The EFCC clarified that the former President’s facility was not the target of the raid but was used by the suspects as a cover for an illicit pool party.
Investigations revealed that the suspects, mostly young men, had initially planned the event across two different locations but relocated to the OOPL hotel in an attempt to evade law enforcement. However, EFCC operatives, acting on intelligence, tracked and apprehended them during the gathering.
Upon profiling, nearly all the arrested individuals were found complicit in alleged cybercrime activities, including impersonation, identity theft, and internet fraud. Some suspects have reportedly confessed to their involvement in fraudulent schemes.
The anti-graft agency stated that the arraignment of the remaining suspects would follow in due course.
The EFCC reaffirmed its commitment to combating cybercrime and urged the public to remain vigilant against fraudulent activities.
