Kaduna – February 17, 2024

Operatives of the Nigeria Police Force and the Department of State Services (DSS) have arrested a suspected Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) agent, Shehu Aliyu Patangi, with ₦25.9 million in cash allegedly meant for vote-buying in the ongoing Chikun/Kajuru Federal Constituency election in Kaduna State.

The suspect was apprehended around 3:30 a.m. on Saturday in a popular hotel along Turunku Road in Kaduna metropolis following a joint security operation. Authorities believe the money was earmarked to bribe voters and influence the election outcome.

A security source involved in the operation confirmed the arrest, stating, “The suspect was caught with a large sum of money suspected to be for the inducement of voters. Investigations are ongoing to determine the extent of the plot.”

The arrest has sparked reactions from civil society groups and political observers, who have repeatedly raised concerns about the role of money in Nigeria’s electoral process. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is yet to comment on the development.

Security agencies have assured the public of their commitment to ensuring a free, fair, and credible election, warning that anyone involved in electoral malpractice will face the full wrath of the law.
