ABEOKUTA – Honourable Jelili Kayode Amusan, a former National Assembly member and prominent Ogun State All Progressives Congress (APC) gubernatorial aspirant, has commended former legislators from Southern Nigeria for endorsing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s reelection bid. The endorsement took place at the Southern Summit of Former Legislators held on Saturday at the June 12 Cultural Centre in Kuto, Abeokuta.
The summit brought together key political figures, including the Chief of Staff to the President Rt. Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila, Ogun State Governor Prince Dapo Abiodun, former Senate President Ken Nnamani, and former House of Representatives Speaker Yakubu Dogara, among others. In a communiqué, the former lawmakers praised Tinubu’s economic reforms, which they said have “re-engineered the economy, strengthened the currency, and set the nation on the path of socio-economic recovery.”
Amusan, a two-term federal lawmaker who represented Abeokuta North/Obafemi-Owode/Odeda Federal Constituency, played a significant role at the event. His participation is seen as a strategic move to align with the national APC agenda and bolster his gubernatorial ambition ahead of the 2027 elections.
As Governor Dapo Abiodun’s second term nears its end, Amusan has positioned himself as a leading contender for the APC gubernatorial ticket. His aspiration is driven by several factors:
1. Political Experience and Track Record: Amusan served two terms in the House of Representatives, earning a reputation as a constituency-focused lawmaker. He notably forfeited his salary to fund developmental projects and social support for his constituents, enhancing his public trust and credibility.
2. Business Acumen: With a background in Real estate development, the hospitality industry, oil and gas, and merchandise, Amusan is viewed as a pragmatic leader capable of leveraging Ogun State’s industrial potential. His private sector experience is expected to attract investments and drive economic growth.
3. Broad Political Network: Described as a “gentleman with wide contacts,” Amusan maintains strong relationships with high-net-worth individuals, political heavyweights, and policymakers. This network could benefit Ogun State through increased investment and federal support.
4. Cross-District Appeal: Although hailing from Ogun Central, Amusan’s supporters emphasise his ability to bridge historical divisions between the Egba, Ijebu, and Yewa/Awori political blocs. This is critical in a state where zoning considerations are intensely debated, particularly with Ogun West yet to produce a governor since the state’s creation in 1976.
5. Alignment with National Leadership: By endorsing Tinubu’s reelection, Amusan has demonstrated loyalty to the APC’s national leadership, which could enhance his chances of securing party support for his gubernatorial bid.
6. Clean Public Image: Amusan has cultivated a reputation as a contented leader focused on service rather than self-enrichment. His decision to redirect his legislative salary to development projects distinguishes him from many contemporaries accused of prioritising personal gain.
Despite his strengths, Amusan faces significant challenges, including strong agitation for power to shift to Ogun West and competition from other high-profile aspirants. However, his alignment with Tinubu’s agenda and his extensive political and business experience make him a formidable candidate.
The Southern Summit of Former Legislators not only reinforced Tinubu’s growing support base but also highlighted Amusan’s strategic positioning within the APC. As the 2027 elections approach, his ability to navigate zoning dynamics and leverage his national connections will be crucial in determining his success in the Ogun State governorship race.
In a statement issued after the event, the Media Office of Hon. Jelili Kayode Amusan said: “Hon. Amusan was honoured to stand in solidarity with respected leaders from across the South to affirm our collective support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s transformative leadership and his bid for a second term. This summit underscores a unified belief in the Renewed Hope Agenda, which is already setting the nation on a firm path to socio-economic recovery. Hon. Amusan remains committed to leveraging his experience and networks to support this national vision and, by the grace of God, translate its principles into tangible development for the good people of Ogun State.”
