A 21-year-old trader on Tuesday in an Ogudu Magistrates’ Court, Lagos faced assault charges after police said he beat up a pregnant woman who refused to accept his request for an intimate relationship.

Pregnant WomanOpeyemi Abdullahi of Ikolaba Street, Ibadan is facing one count of assault.

The Prosecutor, Insp Lucky Ihiehie, told the court that the accused committed the offence on Nov. 1 at about 5 p.m at Ojota Bus Stop.

Ihiehie said the complainant, Koyinsola Saib, was returning from work with her friend when she met the accused at Maryland Bus Stop who approached her for a relationship.

The prosecutor alleged that the accused tried to blackmail the complainant.

He alleged that Abdullahi accused the complainant, her husband, mother and brother of “selling children”.

“The accused threatened to expose the complainant’s secret if she did not go out with him. He said that the only way he was going to delete the pictures was if she could abort her pregnancy and marry him.

“When she refused, he assaulted and inflicted injury on her,” he told the court.

According to the prosecutor, the offence contravened Section 173 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

The Magistrate, Mrs Ejiro Kubeinje, granted the accused bail in the sum of N50, 000 with one surety in like sum.

Kubeinje ordered that the surety must reside within the court jurisdiction with the evidence of tax payments.

The magistrate adjourned the case until Dec. 2 for mention.
