Controversial Nigerian senator Dino Melaye says he has been arrested at the international airport in the capital, Abuja, as he tried to fly to Morocco.

The senator, who represents Kogi West constituency, tweeted that he had been going to the North African country for an official engagement:

Senator representing Kogi West Senatorial District in the National Assembly, Dino Melaye, was on Monday arrested by the Nigeria Immigration Service operatives at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International airport Abuja on his way to Morocco.

His arrest may not be unconnected to his refusal to report at the Force Headquarters in Kogi for questioning.

Melaye took to Twitter to announce his arrest.

“I have just been arrested at the international wing of the Nnamdi Azikiwe airport on my way to Morocco for an official engagement sponsored by the Federal Govt after checking in,” he said on Twitter.

Neither the service nor the police had yet to confirm the arrest.

The police had on May 3, warned the Senator to appear in court ahead of his arraignment on May 10, 2018.

He was arraigned on a case of conspiracy and unlawful possession of prohibited firearms already filed before a Federal High Court in Lokoja, Kogi State.
