Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Chief Ayo Adebanjo, a foremost nationalist, elder statesman, and leader of the Pan-Yoruba socio-cultural group, Afenifere. Adebanjo, a staunch disciple of the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo, died at the age of 96 on Friday at his residence in Lekki, Lagos State.
In a statement released in Abeokuta, Governor Abiodun described Adebanjo’s death as a profound loss to Nigeria, marking the end of a glorious era. He praised the late legal and political icon as a man of unwavering principles, whose life embodied Nigeria’s journey from the struggle for independence to the post-independence era, through military rule, and the return to democratic governance.
Abiodun highlighted Adebanjo’s relentless advocacy for federalism, good governance, and the defense of Yoruba interests, noting that he stood tall among his contemporaries. “Chief Ayo Adebanjo represented the finest of Ogun State and Nigeria as a whole. His ideals will never be forgotten,” the governor said.
He further emphasized Adebanjo’s integrity and courage, recalling his activism dating back to 1943 as a follower of Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe, his role in the youth wing of the Action Group in the 1950s, and his active participation in constitutional conferences to reshape Nigerian federalism. “Adebanjo never refrained from being a voice of courage and a force for good. His strident advocacy for federalism was unmatched,” Abiodun added.
The governor acknowledged Adebanjo’s sacrifices, including being hounded by the Establishment and exiled for resisting autocracy and fighting for the masses. “He lived through the finest and ugliest moments of Nigerian history, yet he never hid his identity as a passionate defender of the Yoruba nation and its interests,” Abiodun stated.
While mourning the loss, Governor Abiodun expressed gratitude to God for blessing Ogun State with such an exceptional figure. “We are still coming to terms with his passing, but we are profoundly grateful to the Almighty for giving us such a gem. He will be sorely missed,” he concluded.
Chief Ayo Adebanjo’s legacy as a fearless advocate for justice, federalism, and Yoruba interests leaves an indelible mark on Nigeria’s political landscape. His passing has been met with tributes from across the nation, celebrating his life and contributions to the country’s development.
