The Ogun State Police Command has initiated an investigation into a tragic motor accident that occurred on Tuesday along the Abeokuta-Ibadan highway, near Ajobo village. The collision involved a Lexus ES 350 and a Zafira 1.8 Space Wagon, resulting in the death of a 55-year-old man and injuries to six others.

According to a statement released by the command’s spokesperson, Omolola Odutola, preliminary reports from eyewitnesses suggest that the accident was caused by the reckless driving of the Lexus ES 350, operated by 26-year-old Abiodun Michael, who was traveling from Ibadan to Abeokuta. The Zafira car, driven by the deceased, Popoola Ishola Kayode, was heading in the opposite direction.

The statement detailed that the Lexus driver failed to reduce speed while negotiating a sharp bend, lost control, and veered into the opposite lane, colliding head-on with the Zafira. The impact resulted in the immediate death of Mr. Kayode, while six passengers in his vehicle sustained varying degrees of injuries.

Upon receiving the report, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Odeda Division promptly deployed motor traffic police and patrol teams to the scene. The injured victims were rushed to the General Hospital in Odeda for emergency treatment, with those suffering fractures later transferred to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) in Idi-Aba, Abeokuta, for specialized care.

The Ogun State Police Command has called on members of the public with any information regarding the fleeing Lexus driver or additional witnesses to come forward to aid the ongoing investigation. The command also reiterated its commitment to enforcing road safety regulations and ensuring that reckless drivers are held accountable under the law.

This incident underscores the need for heightened caution on highways, particularly around sharp bends, to prevent such tragedies in the future.
