The Ogun State Police Command has said any vehicles found operating without the required paperwork or registration would be impounded, and those found guilty will face legal action.

The State Commissioner of Police, Lanre Ogunlowo, said this crackdown is part of a broader effort to ensure safety and curb criminal activities in the state.

This was contained in a statement signed by the command’s spokesperson, Omolola Odutola and obtained by this Newspaper on Monday, in Abeokuta, the state capital.

According to the statement, the statistical review of 2024 crime data, revealed that most violent crimes in the state, including kidnapping, armed robbery, and rival cult killings, were perpetrated by individuals using vehicles in flagrant disregard of traffic regulations.

The statement added that the command has begun a public sensitization campaign to address the rampant use of unregistered vehicles, motorcycles, tricycles, and dealership plate numbers in violation of extant traffic and vehicle registration laws.

Ogunlowo, while lamenting that offences such as operating without valid papers, driving unregistered vehicles, using expired dealership licenses and applying artificial tint to cars have become alarmingly common, warned recalcitrant offenders that non-compliance will attract severe consequences.

He, however, directed all drivers in the state to regularize their vehicle documents promptly.

Part of the statement reads, “A grace period for compliance has been announced, during which drivers are expected to update their papers.

“After the sensitization period, the police will adopt a zero-tolerance approach toward violators. Vehicles found operating without proper registration or documents will be impounded, and offenders will be prosecuted”.

Reiterating the command’s commitment to maintaining law and order, the commissioner urged residents to adhere strictly to traffic laws and cooperate with the authorities to foster a secure environment.
