Abeokuta — Egba High Chiefs yesterday told Governor Gbenga Daniel of Ogun State that he cannot depose their monarch, the Alake of Egbaland, Oba (Dr.) Adedotun Aremu Gbadebo.

The chiefs were reacting to alleged moves by Daniel to depose the monarch as reported in a national daily (not Daily Champion).

The chiefs were reacting to alleged moves by Daniel to depose the monarch as reported in a national daily. The Oluwo of Iporo, Chief Alani-Suara Bankole, warned Daniel never to think of deposing Alake, saying the plot if hatched at all will consume him (Daniel). The Oluwo of Ake, Chief Segun Taiwo, said Daniel would be “daydreaming” by thinking or plotting Alake’s deposition. Taiwo warned that such action would be counter-productive because the Egbas are in full support of their monarch and as such would resist any attempt to remove him.

Taiwo said Daniel’s constitutional power to remove Alake would be counter-productive, adding that after all, the kingmakers were the ones that picked Alake for the government’s ratification and not the other way round.

A media aide to the governor, who craved anonymity, urged journalists to stop fuelling the disagreement between the governor and the monarch. He described the newspaper report as another effort at compounding the issue and described it as baseless.

Governor’s Statement: Governor Gbenga Daniel has asked the monarch to, as a matter of urgency, dissociate himself from the “inciting remarks” of his chiefs on him and his government, or else he would “exercise all options towards ensuring that peace and good order in the State are not put in jeopardy”

Commissioner for Information: Daniel accused Egba Chiefs of making inciting remarks “which threaten the peace of our State, affront the dignity of the person of the Governor and seek to diminish the integrity of his mandate from the good people of Ogun State”
