The Sokoto State Coordinator of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Mr Philip Enaberue, has described the late corps member, The Fortune-Ihieche, as a vibrant and patriotic young man.

Enaberue told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday at the orientation camp in Wamakko Local Government Area of the state that the deceased was a dedicated and most popular corps member in the camp.

He said that the deceased, who hailed from Imo, with registration number SO/19A/1285, was a graduate of Economics from Gregory University in Imo.

According to him, Fortune-Ihieche died at 11.30p.m on Sunday, while being taken to the Usman Danfodio Teaching Hospital, Sokoto.

The NYSC coordinator, however, denied reports that the corps member died due to negligence at the camp’s clinic.

“It is normal procedure that camp clinic should be manned by doctors and consultants to attend to a patient-reported ill before referral when the need arises.

“We have two stationed ambulances with all required gadgets at the camp for emergencies,” Enaberue said.

The coordinator noted that the late corps member had applied for redeployment to Cross River, adding that the application was approved and that he was to collect his letter of approval the day he died.

Enaberue said there was no protest as a result of the corps member’s death, saying that he addressed the NYSC members immediately the incident occurred.

According to him, prayers were offered; silence observed and flags flew at half-mast in his honour.

He said that Fortune-Ihieche had collected his allowance and participated in the cultural and other camp activities earlier on Sunday before he died.
