In a significant political development, former Kaduna State Governor and founding member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai, has allegedly resigned from the ruling party. A statement purportedly released by El-Rufai and widely shared online announced his decision to join the opposition Social Democratic Party (SDP), citing a misalignment of values and a lack of internal democracy within the APC.
El-Rufai, a key figure in the formation of the APC in 2013, allegedly expressed disappointment with the current leadership of the party, stating that it has strayed from the progressive ideals of its founding members. The statement highlighted his concerns about the party’s direction, which he claimed to have raised both privately and publicly in recent years, but noted that these issues remained unaddressed.
“Developments in the last two years confirm that there is no desire on the part of those who currently control and run the APC to acknowledge, much less address, the unhealthy situation of the party,” the statement attributed to El-Rufai read.
The former governor, who played a pivotal role in securing the APC’s electoral victories in 2015, 2019, and 2023, reportedly emphasized his commitment to progressive values and nation-building. He recounted his eight-year tenure in Kaduna State, during which he implemented policies focused on education, healthcare, infrastructure, job creation, and investment attraction. However, he lamented that these contributions now hold little significance in the current APC, which he accused of disregarding its members and undermining its internal structures.
According to the statement, El-Rufai’s resignation letter was submitted to his ward in Kaduna State, effective immediately. Following consultations with mentors, colleagues, and supporters, he allegedly announced his decision to join the SDP, describing it as the platform for his future political engagements.
“I have decided to join the Social Democratic Party (SDP) and adopt it as the platform for our future political activities,” the statement declared.
El-Rufai also reportedly called on other opposition leaders and parties to unite under a single democratic platform to challenge the APC in upcoming elections, including the 2027 general elections. He urged his supporters and Nigerians concerned about the country’s future to join him in the SDP, describing the move as a step towards making Nigeria a beacon of pride for Africans and the Black Race.
“Without prejudice to this decision, as a member of the SDP, I will focus on engaging with and persuading other opposition leaders and parties to join us and congregate under a unified democratic platform,” the statement added.
The former governor concluded the statement with a message of hope, saying, “God Bless the Social Democratic Party. God Bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”
If confirmed, El-Rufai’s defection could have significant implications for Nigeria’s political landscape, particularly as the country gears up for the 2027 elections. His move to the SDP, if verified, could galvanize opposition forces and reshape the dynamics of the nation’s politics in the coming years.
