Chief Samuel Ayodele Adebanjo, a renowned nationalist, elder statesman, and leader of the Yoruba socio-cultural group, Afenifere, has died at the age of 96. He passed away peacefully on the morning of Friday, February 14, 2025, at his residence in Lekki, Lagos State.
The family confirmed his demise in a statement released to the press, describing him as a devoted patriot who dedicated his life to the pursuit of truth, equity, and justice. “He died peacefully this morning, Friday, February 14, 2025, at his Lekki, Lagos, Nigeria home at the age of 96,” the statement read.
Chief Adebanjo, a distinguished lawyer and former organizing secretary of the Action Group, was a prominent advocate for true federalism and a progressive Nigeria. He is survived by his 94-year-old wife, Chief Christy Ayo-Adebanjo, as well as children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
The family praised his unwavering commitment to the nation, stating, “We will forever cherish his commitment to fighting for truth, equity, and justice. His belief and struggle for a truly independent and progressive Nigeria was total, and this he fought for until he breathed his last breath.”
Plans for a befitting funeral are underway, with consultations ongoing among his friends, associates, and various interest groups across Nigeria and beyond. Details of the funeral arrangements will be announced in due course.
A condolence register has been opened at his Lagos residence at 8, Ayo Adebanjo Close, Lekki Phase 1, as well as at his country home in Isanya Ogbo, near Ijebu Ode, Ogun State.
Chief Adebanjo’s legacy as a foremost nationalist, elder statesman, and champion of true federalism will be remembered by many across the nation. His passing marks the end of an era for Nigeria’s political and socio-cultural landscape.
